Neelakandeswarar Temple, Kalkulam, Nagercoil

 

Sri Neelakandeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kalkulam near Padmanabhapuram near Nagercoil. The temple is a part of the famed Shivalaya Ottam conducted during Shivaratri. It is the seventh temple in the run sequence of 12 temples. On Shivarathiri devotees will visit 12 Shivalayam by walk, cycle and other mode and this is called as SHIVALAYA OTTAM.  Presiding Deity is called as Sri Neelakandeswarar / Mahadevar. Ambal is called as Sri Ananthavalli. In architecture as well as in rituals, the temple is different to the other Sivalayams.

            The inner prharam has we can see Kanni Moola Ganapathy , Natarajar

             The temple structure is having both Tamilnadu and Kerala culture and lot of sculpture done by Thirumalai Naicker and Kerala Kings. We can see in the outer praharam each and every pillar is having beautiful women idols carrying deepam - PAVAI VILAKKU - in hand

                  This temple is the only temple in the twelve Shivalaya Ottam Temples where there is a big gopuram (tower). And also it is the only temple in the twelve where there is an exclusive Sanctum for Ambal Sri Ananthavalli. Every year, there is a tank festival in the temple tank. The huge gopuram has sculpted figures adorning it. The stone mandapam, various carvings in the shrine, the golden Kodimaram, the vast temple tank outside the temple,  enhance the beauty of the temple.


















 

Temple Timings :  5.00 AM to 11.00 AM and 5.00 PM to 8.00 PM.

 Location : From Nagercoil 18 Kms towards Thakkalay Road, 2 Kms from Thakkalay and 4 Kms from Padmanaba Palace.
