SRI NAGARAJA TEMPLE, Nagercoil

 Sri Nagaraja Temple  is an ancient big temple in Nagercoil.  Age of the temple is between 12th  & 13 the Century. The Nagaraja the serpent king is honored in the main sanctum. Lord NAGARAJAR as the main god in this temple and other shrines have been added to the temple during the 17th century. Now we can see Sri Krishna (Vishnu), as well as Lord Shiva and Ambal. Also we can see Jain iconography of the Tirthankaras and Padmavati Devi near the temple’s main sanctum. It was told till before 17th century the temple was with Sri Nagarajar and other Jain Icons inside and nithya pooja done by Jains in their culture. Only later other shrines are added and poojas performed in Tamil culture.

             There are three shrines in the temple. Sri Nagarajar is the oldest and main deity in the main mandapam. The second shrine is dedicated to Sri Ananthakrishna (Sri Krishna dancing on a snake) with Rukmini and Satyabhama. Lord Shiva is in the third shrine. Six icons of Jaina Tirthankaras and a goddess, such as Parsvanatha and Padmavati Devi, with unusual, non-standard emblems, can be found in the mandapa (all lions). We can see Sri Subrahmanyar, Sri Ganapathy and Devi Bhagavati. We also can see Serpent statues in all sides and temple tank walls. Two giant size snake sculptures guarding main deity. Nagapanchami, The annual festival where nagas are offered milk and worshipped is a special significance for this temple. During that day Large crowd will gather.

            Opposite to temple main entrance we can see hugh Sacred Fig - ARASA MARAM - lot of people offer milk to the Snake Putru. The devotees are coming here for seeking good health and offerings. Out side temple entrance we can see Temple Pond.

PUTLUR - SRI ANGALA PARAMESWARI AMMAN Putlur a small village 7 KMs from Thiruvallur on the Thiruvallur - Avadi - Chennai highway. A beautiful temple but small one crowded always. Amman is of natural ANT PUTHU (Ant hill). Amman has all features powerful eyes hands legs and most interestingly with PREGNANT BELLY. Temple is always crowded.
