Sri Thiruvazhmarban Temple, Thirupathisaram

 

Thiruvazhmarban Temple, also known as Sri Kuralappa Perumal  

            Thiruvazhmarban Temple one of the oldest  Vishnu temples in Kaniyakumari District and is located about 5 km from Nagercoil.  This temple is like Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is mentioned in the Divya Prabandha. This old temple is belonging to the period between 6th & 9th centuries. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam.  Here Sri Vishnu, who is worshipped as Thiruvazhmarban and Thayar as Sri Kamalavalli Nachiyar. The main deity is 9 feet tall, in sitting position and is made of a special element called Kastusarkara yogam, Mustard and Jaggery paste and Idol is facing East.  Since the presiding deity is made of Mustard and Jaggery paste, no Abishekam to Moolavar. Abishekam is done for Utsavar only. There is no separate shrine for Thayar Lakshmi here as she is believed to be reside in the chest of the Vishnu  and here Perumal is known as THIRUVAZHMARBAN . Sri Vishnu  holds his Shangu and Chakra in his hands. The main mandapam is with lot of Old art carvings.

            On the right of the main sannithanam, there is small sannathi for  Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. Here Lord Hanuman is seated before him hearing the story of Ramayana from Agastiyar . There is also a sanctum for Kulasekara Alwar and Vibheeshana There are also the images of Vishwaksenara, Kulasekara Azhwar, Nataraja and Sivakami. Other shrines are Garuda, Sage Agasthya, Lord Shiva, Vibishana, Saptha Rishis, Nammalvar, Ramanuja, Vedanta Desika, and Azhwars & Acharyas.

            A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The beautiful temple tank Soma Theertham is located opposite to the temple  outside the main entrance.












Temple Timings :  Morning 7.00 to 11.00 AM  and Evening  4.30 PM to 8.00 PM

Location : 5 Kms from Nagercoil to Tirunelveli Highway - a small diversion to Thiruppathisaram.
